Street resurfacing

To extend the life of a street, we replace the top layer of asphalt pavement. This will extend the life of a street between larger reconstructions. Pedestrian ramps are also replaced to meet current ADA standards.

Program overview

This is an ongoing street maintenance project. We replace the top layer of asphalt pavement to extend the life of a street. We resurface streets between larger street reconstruction projects. The new pavement should last about 10 years.

Public Works evaluates the condition of city streets, keeps track of complaint calls and tracks spending. Using these factors, we select streets for resurfacing. If we don't resurface a street, it will likely require a more expensive and bigger repair.

Traffic impacts

For safety, roadways are generally closed to through traffic during resurfacing work. Some busier streets may remain partly open to help with traffic flow. We do our best to finish projects quickly.

More about pedestrian ramps

To meet current ADA standards, pedestrian ramps need updating or replacement.  The City of Minneapolis covers the cost of the ADA pedestrian ramp upgrades.
