Director of Labor Standards

Position highlights

Responsible for labor standard enforcements within the Civil Rights Department to promote understanding of the rights of residents and employers in the City (sick and safe time, minimum wages, wage theft). Provide administrative oversight of division budget and personnel. Serve as the primary liaison to Minnesota Labor and Industry, US Department of Labor, City staff, City Council members and the Mayor. Review case investigations and issue final legal determinations, and serve as a facilitator during settlement negotiations. Draft rules and recommend improvements for implementing workplace regulations. Develop outreach, education and community engagement strategies. Provide administrative support to the Workplace Advisory Committee.

Candidates must

  • Have a law degree and 5 years of related experience.
  • Be a strategic leader who is skilled in building strong relationships within the community, with colleagues, and staff.
  • Have a nuanced understanding of city government and politics, civil rights, social justice and labor standards with demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Be experienced in community outreach and engagement with marginalized and underserved communities.
  • Have practical experience in administrative law, public hearings, formal investigative examinations, and informal interviews.

Solid Waste Director

Position highlights

The Division of Solid Waste and Recycling (SW&R) provides customer focused and environmentally protective services to keep Minneapolis clean, safe, and attractive for residents. The division oversees collection of solid waste, recycling, organics, yard waste and large item pick-up for approximately 107,000 residential customers in buildings with four or fewer dwelling units and performs graffiti management and abatement among other Clean City initiatives.

The division is a key partner in the city's Zero Waste efforts. To accomplish these goals, the SW&R Director leads a high-performing team of approximately 150 field operations, call center, and office staff and an operating budget of over $45,000,000.

Candidates must

  • Have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Management or a related field.
  • Have six years of experience in managing large solid waste management operations, contract administration, and recycling operations.
  • Have considerable knowledge of solid waste management, including collection and disposal techniques, recycling collection and marketing techniques, contract management, public relations and research.
  • Have considerable knowledge of applicable local, state and federal legislation regarding the collection and disposal of solid waste.
  • Have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public works administration in general.

City Auditor

Position highlights

The City Auditor oversees the Audit Department with responsibilities for performing risk-based independent, objective assurance and consulting services. Investigate alleged abuse, fraud or waste involving City resources. Prepare annual enterprise risk assessment and rolling audit plan for the Audit Committee. Monitor and assure compliance with applicable laws and ordinances, and adherence to sound audit practices. Minimize financial, operational, reputational, strategic and other risks.

Candidates must

  • Have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in business, public policy, compliance, administration or a related field.
  • Have at least eight years of progressively responsible experience in conducting and coordinating audit activities in a complex organization.
  • Have at least 4 years of supervisory or managerial experience directing professional auditors.
  • Be a current Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor.
  • Have demonstrated ability to provide objective and unbiased advice to elected officials and department executives.
  • Have considerable knowledge in financial and performance auditing, public administration, and public financial and fiscal practices.
  • Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of local government and policy-making processes.

Controller

Position highlights

The Controller is responsible for managing the City's financial activities, transactions and processes. Prepare financial and management reports, exchange information with stakeholders, analyze growth opportunities, and coordinate external audits. Responsible for creating, maintaining, reporting, analyzing and interpreting financial information to support sound policy making and managerial decision making, including carrying out the City's financial plans and policies.

Candidates must

  • Have a Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration.
  • Have five years of progressively responsible experience, which includes writing complete financial statements, and working in an organization with multiple divisions in a high revenue organization.
  • Have significant knowledge and experience in government accounting, GAAP, and principles and practices of accounting operations.
  • Have excellent communication skills with the aptitude to convey the important aspects that tell the City's financial story.
  • Have demonstrated problem solving, analytical, leadership and supervisory skills.
