We have three programs to help plant more trees on private property. Learn about our programs.

Spring 2023 tree sale

For homeowners, renters and rental property owners

Enter the tree lottery for a chance to purchase a low-cost tree.

  • Sign up for the spring 2023 tree lottery between February 1 and March 31
  • You can enter the lottery once per address
  • Rental property owners can enter the lottery once for each property they own
  • Renters can: 
    • Work with their property owner or manager
    • Contact the Health Department City Trees program

Enter the lottery

If you are selected in the lottery, you will receive an email in April with the date you can order your tree.

  • You’ll pick up your tree(s) between May 20 and May 22

Tree choices

  • Shade
  • Fruit
  • Evergreen
  • Flowering

Cost

$30 per tree.

 

Green Zones residents

Residents in Minneapolis Green Zones may qualify for a free tree. This program is ongoing. You can apply for a tree any time during the year. 

To qualify, you must:

  • Live in a Green Zone
  • Have enough green space for the tree(s)
  • Commit to watering your tree every week for the first three years

We will work with you to select the best tree and spot to plant it.

Businesses and organizations  

We partner with Tree Trust to provide low cost trees and professionally plant them on your business property.

You can apply for tree(s) anytime during the year. We plant trees in the spring and fall.

To qualify for this program you must have:

  • Enough green space for the tree or trees
  • An outdoor water connection or alternative plan for watering the trees
  • A plan for maintaining and pruning the trees

Cost

$30 per tree, includes:

  • Consultation with a landscaper to find the best trees for your property
  • Planting
  • Mulching
  • Water bags

Request a tree

  • To request a tree, complete and submit an online order form
  • Requests are accepted on a rolling first-come, first-served basis
  • We usually plant trees in the late spring and late fall
