Tree Preservation Ordinance

The City of Minneapolis is creating a new rule to protect trees during construction, called a Tree Preservation Ordinance (TPO). Its main goals are to:

  • Stop trees from being removed during construction when possible
  • Replace trees that are lost
  • Keep trees healthy after construction

Goal of a Tree Preservation Ordinance

Minneapolis has many big, beautiful trees. But trees are lost due to:

  • Pests
  • Disease
  • Construction

This ordinance will help the city grow in a way that protects trees whenever possible.

The Minneapolis Park & Recreation board is responsible for all trees on public property. This includes boulevard trees. Boulevard trees are located between the curb and sidewalk in front of your home. You can communicate boulevard tree concerns and questions through MPRB Forestry by calling 612-313-7710 or emailing forestry@minneapolisparks.org
