An event that changed the world

  • George Perry Floyd was murdered at the intersection of 38th & Chicago in Minneapolis.
  • A police officer was charged with murder.
  • The event changed the world.
  • The City of Minneapolis began its journey of responding, recovering and rebuilding.

Recovery and healing

Trial 

  • The murder trial of MPD officer Derek Chauvin ran from March 8 through April 20.
  • We prepared and implemented a security plan to keep the City safe.
  • Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Perry Floyd.

Reconnection

  • We began a phased reconnection of 38th & Chicago on June 3.
  • The Agape Movement led the effort, with support from the City.

Rise & Remember (formerly the George Floyd Global Memorial) works to preserve the living memorial.  

Planning

The 38th Street THRIVE Strategic Development Plan is completed and signed by the Mayor.  It lays out the community's wishes for economic vibrancy, creative identity, affordability, resilience, and partnership.

Community Engagement

  • We encouraged all community members to be part of engagement events in 2024.
  • Some events included discussion on community priorities for the Peoples Way.
  • We included the community's priorities in a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to choose a community owner. The RFQ is a way for the City to ask interested group to apply to the City to become the future community owner.
  • We issued the RFQ in November 2024. The City and community members are discussing who will be the future property owner.

Community Ownership

  • City staff will work with community members to recommend one community owner to the City Council and the Mayor.
  • The Mayor and City Council will make the final selection of the future community owner.
  • The selected owner, community, and City staff will work together to shape the future of the site.
