Special assessments

A special assessment is a bill for City work that benefits your specific property. Special assessments are not a tax. The City performs this work to benefit your property and the community.

Minnesota law allows cities to bill a portion of the cost of the work to the property owner. These City projects help:

Protect your home from water damage
Maintain sidewalks for walking
Improve accessibility for everyone

There are many different types of local improvements that may result in a special assessment on your property.

Public Works is only one department that may charge a special assessment. Other departments can charge special assessments as well.

Some are annual assessments that are charged to you every year. Others are a one-time fee.
