Johnson St. NE green infrastructure restoration
Project overview
A few years ago, the City rebuilt Johnson St NE from 18th Ave NE to Lowry Ave NE. The project:
- Fixed old roads and pipes
- Made it safer for people walking or rolling
- Added a new trail for pedestrians and bikes
It also included green infrastructure. That is infrastructure that mimics or uses natural systems to improve resilience to climate impacts. This often results in environmental, economic, and social co-benefits.
In the fall and early winter of 2024, we worked with the community to select the plantings they wanted to see along the boulevard.
In Spring 2025, a contractor restored the boulevards with various native plantings and grasses. The contractor will care for the plantings through the fall. Once the plantings are well established, the boulevards will be returned to the property owners for on-going care. The contractor will provide property owners with guidance on caring for their boulevard.
Project updates
In Spring 2026, the contractor will complete an inspection to confirm the plantings and grasses are established. The contractor will address any issues that are noted. On-going care of the boulevard will be the responsibility of the property owner. See below for guidance on caring for the plants in your boulevard.
