Project overview

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department is planning to replace about 2,550 feet of sewer pipe along Chowen Avenue South between West 38th Street and West 40th Street. Construction is planned for spring 2027.

The sewer pipes in this area are old. Some pipes have cracks that let water from the ground leak into the sewer system. Other pipes have sunk because of poor soil. These problems can make the sewer system inefficient. They can also lead to more maintenance and increase the risk of sewer backups.

The project will replace the old pipes with new ones. The new pipes will help wastewater flow through the system more easily. They will also help keep groundwater out of the sewer system, reduce the risk of sewer backups, and continue to serve nearby homes for many years.

Traffic impacts

Roadwork and utility work involves use of heavy equipment. These will increase in work areas:

  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • Dust

You might see:

  • Traffic lanes that narrow or are restricted during construction.
  • Parking lanes that will be closed during construction.
  • Pedestrian detours around work areas. These will be set up as needed to enable construction. Expect greater impacts at intersections where work is occurring.
