In spring and summer 2026, the City rebuilt the intersection at 26th St and Hiawatha Ave. The project also improved part of 26th St between Hiawatha Ave and Cedar Ave.
Project work
The project included several upgrades to make the area safer and easier to use for everyone. Work included:
- Changes to the street layout
- New pedestrian refuge islands to help people cross the street safely
- A new multi-use path connecting Cedar Ave to the Hiawatha LRT trail
- Improvements to nearby green spaces
- Rebuilt northern sidewalk
- Rebuilt northern boulevard (grassy area between the sidewalk and the street)
- Rebuilt bike lane along 26th St
Project update
- The east side of the E. 26th St and Hiawatha Ave. intersection is now open. The project is substantially complete.
- The contractor will complete final concrete warranty work, weather permitting.
- Final signing and striping have been completed.
