We oversee our city's environmental programs and services. We take a public health approach to our work.

What we do

Our team of environmental health professionals:

  • Plans, directs and coordinates many of the City's environmental programs
  • Educates residents about the connection between their health and their environment, including the:
    • Air we breathe
    • Water we drink
    • Soil in our yards, gardens and community spaces
    • Buildings where we live, work and play
    • Changing climate
  • Ensures environmental justice and equity by:
    • Engaging diverse people who reflect the population of our city
    • Listening to and supporting people in our most vulnerable communities

Climate and Sustainability

The people in our unit: 

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Provide engagement and support to residents, businesses and environmental justice communities
  • Work with the community to understand climate resilience needs
  • Lead climate equity and clean energy policy and regulations
  • Collaborate with City departments to amplify and fill gaps to fight climate change
  • Report our impact and strategies in our Climate Equity Plan

Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control

The people in our unit focus on environmental hazards inside your homes.

We manage grant programs that help residents with the cost of home renovations to:

  • Remove lead hazards
  • Remove other home hazards

We offer education and services related to:

  • Lead-paint
  • Asthma
  • Radon
  • Bed bugs
