We describe the three types of entertainment that businesses that serve alcohol may have.

Overview

Businesses that serve alcohol can have any of three types of entertainment:

  • General entertainment
  • Limited entertainment
  • No live entertainment

Types of entertainment

General entertainment

This includes all forms of legal entertainment and patron dancing.

Limited entertainment

This entertainment is only for:

  • Literary readings
  • Storytelling
  • Live solo comedians
  • Karaoke
  • Amplified or nonamplified music by a disc jockey or any number of musicians
  • Group singing by patrons of the establishment, with no patron dancing

No live entertainment

This means no entertainment other than the use of:

  • Radio
  • Television
  • Electronically reproduced music
  • Jukebox

Hearing protection

City law requires all businesses with general entertainment to provide hearing protection to:

  • Customers
  • Employees
