Firefighter pre-employment tests

You need to meet our health and fitness standards to be a firefighter.

Candidate Physical Ability Test

You must take and pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) before you are invited to a job interview. It is a rigorous test that measures:

  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Physical Coordination

The test involves performing eight simulated job tasks.

To pass, you must complete the tasks in less than 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

This is a pass/fail test.

After you receive a conditional job offer

 

Background check

We conduct a background check to make sure you meet our criteria for employment.

Pre-employment tests

You take these pre-employment tests.

Medical exam

  • The exam will test your vision, hearing and physical ability to do the job.

Psychological exam

  • The exam includes 
    • A written personality assessment
    • An interview with a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist

Drug and alcohol screening

  • You will need to pass a drug and alcohol screening.
If the results meet our hiring criteria, we will make a final job offer.
