Terms to know

No basis

Cases may be closed with no discipline because all allegations are established as false by irrefutable evidence.

No jurisdiction

Cases may be closed with no discipline because the case is not regarding a MPD officer/employee, therefore, we do not have jurisdiction to handle these matters.

Failure to state a claim

Cases may be closed with no discipline because all allegations (taken as true) and obtainable information fail to indicate potential misconduct of a City of Minneapolis policy or a MPD policy.

This includes non-specific and general complaints about police or policing.

Cleared by exception

The [Office of Police Conduct Review/MPD Internal Affairs] only has authority over currently employed, sworn officers of the Minneapolis Police Department (Minneapolis City Ordinance §172.20).

Cases may be closed with no discipline imposed if there are only minor allegations against a previously employed MPD member.

If the allegations are serious, the investigation will continue.

Non-disciplinary corrective action

Cases may be closed with no discipline because the sustained allegations were minor in nature and were resolved by non-disciplinary corrective action, such as coaching or training.
