Climate equity

We are reducing the impact of climate change in Minneapolis.

Why it's important

We need to reduce greenhouse gases as soon as possible.

We’re already feeling climate change in Minneapolis, but it will be harder on people who:

  • Live in areas or homes vulnerable to extreme weather
  • Don’t have resources to adapt to climate change
  • Already face health and environmental burdens

Climate Equity Plan

Our Climate Equity Plan outlines our goals and strategies to achieve climate equity in Minneapolis.

Goals

Our goal is to act immediately to do our part toward limiting global warming to 1.5⁰C.

Our primary commitment is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

Background

In October 2021, Mayor Frey pledged commitment to the Race to Zero campaign.

The Climate Equity Plan further affirmed the City’s commitments. City Council adopted the plan in 2023.

We also adopted GHG reduction five-year milestones based on science and equity. These milestones go through 2050.

Results

You can find results on the City's most recent progress toward our goal in the annual reports of the Minneapolis Clean Energy Partnership.
