Minneapolis Animal Care & Control lowers pet adoption fees to spur adoption rates

January 17, 2024

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control (MACC) has lowered adoption fees with the goal of increasing animal adoptions. The shelter is also now at maximum capacity.

“We want to make sure Minneapolis residents know they can now adopt a cat or dog without an adoption fee at our shelter, and that we have lowered the fees for non-residents as well,” said Danielle Joerger, MACC’s animal shelter supervisor.

Since the start of 2024, adoption fees for residents have been waived, they just need to pay a licensing fee. Fees for non-residents have been lowered from $250 to $100 for adult dogs and from $100 to $25 for cats. Puppy (6 months or younger) adoption fees for residents and non-residents are $250.

Anyone wishing to adopt can visit the shelter, 212 17th Ave. N., 1 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.

“We need adoptions to happen so we can help other animals that need us right now,” Joerger said. “With being so full and the adoption fee reduction, we are hoping people will come find their new pets.”

With the cold winter temperatures hitting Minneapolis this week, Joerger said MACC staff has plans to keep people who visit to adopt pets safe. “We have limited space in our shelter lobby,” Joerger said. “We will be taking names and phone numbers to text people as they will need to wait in their car to stay warm until we can accommodate them in the building.”

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control partners with the community to ensure the health and safety of pets and people by promoting and supporting responsible and humane care of animals. Its staff includes two veterinarians, three veterinary technicians, four animal care technicians and a dozen animal control officers who, among other things, rescue animals, enforce laws pertaining to public health and safety and investigate animal crimes.

In addition to staff, volunteers spent more than 7,000 hours of their time working with animals at the shelter. More information on adopting animals, volunteering, and supporting Animal Care & Control is available on the City website.
