Working across diverse communities

 

This session will look at culturally specific methods to connect with diverse communities. This is through using a health equity approach.

The session centers on:

  • How to identify community health disparities
  • Building real relationships
  • Creating trust
  • Communicating in ways that are respectful to cultural norms and practices

The Neighborhood Community Relations Cultural Specialist will lead the training.

Centering our communities: Realities of Black and American Indian Maternal Health

At this session, you will learn: 

  • How to describe key factors contributing to maternal health disparities affecting Black and American Indian birthing people. These include factors of health that are:
    • Historical
    • Systemic
    • Social
  • In promoting maternal and infant well-being, the role of:
    • Community wisdom
    • Cultural practices
    • Traditional support systems

 

  • How to identify at least two culturally rooted, community-based approaches (e.g., doulas, peer support, storytelling) that are effective in advancing birth equity.
  • To name specific actions in your community that you and others can take to support Black and American Indian families during:
    • Pregnancy
    • Birth
    • Postpartum

Each month, there will is an optional one-hour online session to go along with the Public Health Community Institute trainings.

These sessions focus on topics for new leaders and team members like:

  • Leadership and team building
  • Self-care
  • Setting boundaries
  • Other important skills

You'll learn helpful tips and tools you can:

  • Use right away
  • Meet other leaders
  • Find support for the challenging work you do

These are supplementary sessions and do not count towards the required sessions to apply for funding.
