Overview

With multiple law enforcement agencies in town, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with City emergency and non-emergency vehicles.

Police vehicles could be marked or unmarked. Fire Department vehicles are always red. City teams drive different makes and models, but the City’s logo is always present.

No matter what vehicle they drive, City personnel do not:

  • Participate in federal immigration law enforcement
  • Loan any vehicles to federal teams

City vehicle identification

Verify a vehicle

Residents and visitors can follow these steps to confirm whether a vehicle they see in Minneapolis is a City vehicle.

City vehicles often include:

  • City logos or decals
  • Uniformed City staff nearby

However, not all City vehicles look the same.

Temporary and rental vehicles are sometimes used

At times, City departments use short-term rental vehicles due to:

  • Fleet shortages
  • Seasonal operations (like snow-related response)
  • Emergency or specialized work

For your safety:

  • Do not stop or confront the driver
  • Do not attempt to block or follow the vehicle

When reporting to 311

When you contact 311, you can share:

  • Location (street, intersection, neighborhood)
  • Vehicle description (color, type, markings)
  • License plate information, if visible
  • Time and date you observed the vehicle

This information helps the City verify the vehicle and track patterns.

What happens after you report

  • Relevant City departments can review and confirm whether the vehicle is City-owned or City-contracted
  • 911 supervisors have awareness of these reports
