Technical notes

Key terms to know

  • Contact: Engagement with individuals at high risk of being a victim or perpetrator of violence. Includes: contact information exchange, service referrals, emergency transportation and ongoing communication about the program.
  • Outreach touches: Light, informal engagements with any person during an outreach shift, regardless of their level of risk for violence.
  • Business engagements: Providing Violence Interrupter presence as decided between business owners and Violence Interrupters.
  • Participant engagements: Any interaction with an existing or new participant. A participant or client is an individual at high risk of perpetration or victimization of violence that receives ongoing engagement and follow-up, or formal case management.
  • Services, resources, and referrals: The distribution or connection to physical resources, services, or referrals during Violence Interrupter outreach shift.
  • Public educational materials: Violence interrupters passing out educational materials on gun violence awareness literature and anti-violent messages while conducting outreach (also known as “Pub Ed”).
  • Substance abuse treatment referrals: Violence interrupters connect an individual to a substance abuse treatment provider or facility upon identification of need during outreach. This may or may not include coordinating transportation.
  • Mental health referrals: Violence interrupters connect an individual to a mental health treatment provider or facility upon identification of need during outreach. This may or may not include coordinating transportation.
  • Housing referrals: Violence interrupters connect an individual to housing or shelter upon identification of need during outreach. This may or may not include coordinating transportation.
  • Flyers to upcoming events: Distribution of advertisements, physical or digital, to promote upcoming events hosted or attended by Violence Interrupters.
  • Narcan distribution: Distributing Narcan to individuals at risk for substance abuse or overdose as upon identification of need during outreach.
  • Food distribution: Distribution of food to individuals during outreach upon identification of need.
  • Event or activity: A planned activity for community members to attend, either hosted by Violence Interrupters or by another organization.
  • Attendance: Total number of individuals who attend events or activities hosted by Violence Interrupters.
