Short term food permit

You can get a one-time permit for food and beverage vendors at public events.

You may need a one-time short term food permit to sell or give away food or beverage to the public.

You may need the permit even if you have a:

  • Licensed restaurant
  • Other licensed food business

An event food sponsor must invite short-term food vendors to take part in a public event.

What to know

Definitions

Short term food permit vendors:

  • Are invited to participate in an event by an event food sponsor
  • Sell or give away food or beverage at a public event
  • May only sell or give away foods and/or beverages that have been approved on their short-term food permit application

What they sell

Short term food vendors typically:

  • Provide ready-to-eat food and/or beverages
  • Provide packaged food and/or beverages

Seasonal permit

If you are vending at two or more events, you need a seasonal permit.

Who may not need this permit

Application and fees

Application

Your event food sponsor will give you the short term food permit application. The application is in English or Spanish. 

  • Give your application to your event food sponsor at least two weeks before the event.

If you are using a commissary kitchen:

  • Attach a copy of your letter showing you have permission to use or lease the kitchen.

Apply for a short term food permit

City fees

Fees for a short-term food permit:

  • $100 for each public event in the City of Minneapolis
  • $50 for public events at the Minneapolis Convention Center

Statewide hospitality fee

The State of Minnesota is now charging an additional fee for all food vendors that request permits in the city of Minneapolis.

The additional fee is $50.

Deadline

Your application is due at least two weeks before your event begins. 

Fees are doubled for late applications.

Payment

Give your payment to your event food sponsor. 

Your event food sponsor may ask you to:

  • Pay them directly, or
  • Give them a check made out to Minneapolis Finance

Requirements

Handwashing

You must have a handwashing station where food is being prepared or packaged.

Lack of required handwashing stations will result in immediate closure.

Food and beverages prepared to be:

  • Eaten immediately off-site or
  • Taken to-go

Must be in containers that are:  

  • Reusable 
  • Recyclable or
  • Compostable
