What to know
Operating locations
- Licensed trucks can vend curbside on approved streets
- Licensed trucks can vend at a brewery, distillery or other private property with these limitations:
- Food trucks may not operate more than 21 days annually at any one place
- Food trucks must be removed daily when operation ends
Food requirements and special events
- Food preparation and storing must occur at a licensed kitchen in Minneapolis
- If you operate at community events or farmers markets:
- You must have written permission from the event organizer
- You do not need a separate license or permit
- See special event food and beverages
- See farmers market vendor
- If you only operate at special events, you may only need a short term or seasonal food permit.

Requirements
Before you begin
Street locations
You may need to submit the following with your application:
- Location plan if you are on private property
- Letter of approval if you are near a park, restaurant, or on private property
Food plan review
You must submit plans to:
- Open a new food or alcohol business, including:
- Food carts
- Food kiosks
- Food trucks
- Remodel or expand an existing food or alcohol business
- Replace food equipment that needs any of these permits for installation:
- Gas
- Mechanical
- Plumbing
- Add ventless cooking equipment or ventless hoods
The City must approve your plans before you start any work.
Food safety
You are responsible for food safety. This includes control of food from preparation to serving customers.

Minneapolis has rules about containers for prepared food.
Food and beverages prepared to be:
- Eaten immediately off-site or
- Taken to-go
Must be in containers that are:
- Reusable
- Recyclable or
- Compostable
