Minneapolis Leads Nation as Adopt-a-Drain Program hits 1 Million Pound milestone

November 14, 2025

Volunteers with the Adopt-a-Drain program have reached a remarkable milestone: more than one million pounds of debris, leaves, and sediment have been cleared from storm drains across the United States since the program launched in 2015.

Minneapolis is leading the way, operating the #1 Adopt-a-Drain program in the nation, with more than 4,100 residents adopting approximately 8,300 drains. This means the City of Minneapolis accounts for more than 20% of program participation nationwide. Minneapolis’ increased participation is reflected in the impact. In 2024, 45,292 pounds of debris were cleared by Minneapolis volunteers – adding to the nearly 300,000 pounds that have been prevented from reaching the Mississippi River and the city’s 22 lakes since 2019.

“This milestone is a huge achievement for Adopt-a-Drain and a testament to our community,” said Angie Craft, Director of Surface Water and Sewers. “Minneapolis residents continue to step up in inspiring ways to care for their neighborhoods, their lakes, and each other. One million pounds removed shows the incredible impact we can make together.”

This milestone highlights the power of community action to protect clean water and reduce pollution in local waterways. Each year, rain and snowmelt wash debris, litter, and chemicals from streets into storm drains, which flow directly to lakes, rivers, and creeks. By keeping drains clear, volunteers help reduce flooding, improve water quality, and protect neighborhood infrastructure.

The Adopt-a-Drain program is a regional initiative that invites residents to “adopt” storm drains near their homes or businesses and keep them free of debris. Participation is simple—volunteers spend just a few minutes each month clearing leaves, trash, and sediment, then report the weight of what they collect online.

This one million–pound milestone is just the beginning. Minneapolis and its partners are already looking ahead to the next goal: two million pounds of debris kept out of local waters through community action.
