MACC hosting free animal adoption events every Wednesday now through September

August 5, 2025

Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) is offering free animal adoption events every Wednesday now through September thanks to a $13,300 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This is part of the Rescue Effect campaign with animal shelters and rescues across the country to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption and expanded efforts to place more animals into loving homes.

“MACC is a bit of a revolving door for local pets. On average, 400 animals stay in our care each month,” says MACC Supervisor Danielle Joerger. “We do our best to keep them happy and healthy while they are with us, but the one thing they truly need is a loving home. And for that, we need the community’s help.”

Every Wednesday in August and September, community members can adopt an animal for free—regardless of where they live. Minneapolis residents will dually benefit as the grant also covers City-required pet licenses. All animal-loving, pet-seekers can stop by MACC at 212 17th Ave N, between the hours of 1 and 5:30 p.m. to benefit from these funds.

Full shelters

Most shelters across the country are full. Nearly six million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024. Locally, MACC has seen an unprecedented number of animals come to the shelter with the number of annual pet surrenders doubling between 2021 and 2024 from 502 to 1,001.

The ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign helps organizations like MACC increase adoptions and deepen public engagement. The ASPCA provided $2 million in grants to cover adoption fees at many participating shelters and rescue groups across the country.

MACC offers pets of all sizes, ages, and every personality in the book. Every cat and dog ready for adoption is healthy, spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. See pets ready for adoption today.
