The City will improve four intersections in the Whittier neighborhood in south Minneapolis. The goal of these improvements is to increase traffic safety for all users. This includes people walking, biking, riding transit and driving.
The project will make safety upgrades at all four intersections. These updates will include:
- New or improved traffic signals
- New pedestrian curb ramps
Other safety improvements, could be:
- Curb extensions
- Medians
- Better lighting
Project goals
- Make signals easier to see and reduce the number of crashes
- Improve safety and shorten distance of pedestrian crossings
- Make areas more accessible by adding:
- ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS)
Nicollet Ave corridor improvements
Many other improvement projects are in progress, planned, or under consideration for Nicollet Ave S in the coming years.
These projects will improve the safety and accessibility of the corridor south of downtown between Loring Park and Kingfield.
Loring Park Intersection Improvements – 2025
Three intersections on Nicollet Ave received safety improvements in 2025 – Grant St, 15th St, and 18th St. Improvements included signal work, curb extensions, and ADA ramps.
New Nicollet – 2026
In 2026, a new section of Nicollet Ave will be built between Cecil Newman Ln and Lake St. This project is part of the redevelopment of the former K-Mart site. The Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway will also be replaced and the Midtown Greenway access ramp moved to 1st Ave S.
Nicollet Ave Pedestrian Project – 2029
This project will make safety improvements on the Nicollet Ave S corridor between 14th St and 46th St. Most intersections within the project area will receive improvements. Treatments may include curb extensions, medians, ADA ramps, or improved signals depending on the location.
METRO Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Evaluation – 2031 or beyond
Nicollet Ave S is currently served by the Route 18 bus. This service line is being considered for a new BRT route. Metro Transit will announce the results of its study to decide the next BRT routes in 2026. If selected, BRT could come to Nicollet Ave S as soon as 2031. Improvements could include:
- in-lane bus stops
- upgraded amenities
- signal changes
- other transit advantages
