Grand Ave S bridge over Midtown Greenway
Project overview
- The Grand Ave S bridge was built in 1914 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad. It was constructed to help separate railroad traffic from city streets.
- This Grand Ave S bridge goes over the midtown greenway, which is a big pathway for bikes and walkers.
- The road already has sidewalks that are 8 feet wide and grassy areas on both sides, allowing cars and people to use it. The corridor offers one-way southbound vehicular traffic. The bridge length is 106 feet, with a width from curb to curb of 30 feet.
Project goals
- Reconstruct the bridge to maintain safe and efficient use
- Continue to serve street users above and trail users below
- Improve the safety and accessibility of the street on top of the bridge
- Reduce construction impacts on nearby properties as much as possible
- Preserve the historic nature of the bridge
- Improve the visual appeal of the area
Project schedule
Preliminary planning and design
We did outreach during this phase to inform the community of the project.
Bridge rehabilitation study
A study looked at several options for rebuilding the bridge. This process was a requirement of the project's funding sources because the bridge is within a historic district. Evaluation of the options included their impact to the historic district.
Layout approval
The bridge’s street layout will be finalized and approved by City Council.
Final design
A preliminary construction schedule will be decided when the design plans are completed. An update on construction impacts will then be communicated to the community.
Construction
Most construction will take place in 2027, but may start as early as Fall 2026. Updated information will be shared ahead of any construction.
