Cleanup at Minneapolis Democracy Center

Learn about the ongoing cleanup efforts at the Minneapolis Democracy Center.

The Minneapolis Democracy Center

The building at Minnehaha 3000 Ave. is now the Minneapolis Democracy Center (MDC). This was formerly known as the 3rd precinct building.

Cleanup and maintenance

The building at 3000 Minnehaha Ave has been vacant since it was damaged by fire and water in the summer of 2020.

Since then, Property Services has been working with Public Works on cleanup and maintenance.

Our work includes:

  • Clearing all interior debris.
  • Clearing trash from the site.
  • Removing signs and graffiti.
  • Regular wellness checks of the property.
  • Keeping the site secure.

In 2024, the City allocated $1.5 million to do additional cleanup and stabilization work. The goal was to make the building safe for workers to make repairs.

This work resulted in moving fencing off the sidewalk and the removal of razor wire.

Repairs to the building

The City has to complete repairs to the building before it can be renovated into a democracy center.

Our work includes:

  • Engineering updates
  • Repairs to key service components
  • Replacing windows and doors
  • Restoring glazing
  • Rebuilding the front entry

Work will continue through 2025.
