Host a PurpleAir sensor

You can sign up to host an air sensor.

What to know

Anyone can sign up to host an air sensor.

No guarantees

Signing up does not guarantee that you'll receive an air sensor.

How it works

We'll let you know in about a week where you are on the list.

We give priority to people who live in:

  • Environmental justice areas
  • Areas where there is not another air sensor nearby

We distribute air sensors until we run out. More air sensors become available if:

  • A host leaves the program
  • We get funding to buy more

You will remain on the list until you:

  • Receive an air sensor, or
  • Request to be removed from the list

Host information

All PurpleAir sensors available to host through the Community Air Monitoring Project are owned and maintained by the City.

Please do not move or modify the sensor without approval from City staff. The City is responsible for any maintenance or replacement of the sensors as necessary.

To host a sensor, you need:

  • A reliable WiFi network that we can connect the sensor to:  Sensors must be connected to WiFi to report data to the PurpleAir real-time map.
  • Access to an outdoor power outlet: Sensors must be connected to power to report data.
  • Mounting: Sensors are usually attached to a pole or post with zip ties. Screws can also be used, but the City does not provide them.

If your sensor is not reporting data:

If you prefer to no longer host a sensor or are moving outside of Minneapolis:

Contact Jenni Lansing at jenni.lansing@minneapolismn.gov to have your sensor picked up.

If you are moving within Minneapolis and would like to continue hosting a sensor:

Contact Jenni Lansing at jenni.lansing@minneapolismn.gov to let us know the new location of the sensor.
