Goals and vision

Goals

Our goals are to:

  • Offer a space for people to access some city services.
  • Provide resources to address safety and livability concerns along East Lake Street.
  • Connect residents, businesses, and visitors to services while we build the permanent South Minneapolis Community Safety Center.

Addressing community needs

Visitors are able to:

  • Connect with City customer service representatives for non-emergency issues.
  • Access many different resources and support services in one space.
  • Meet with community services providers.

Vision for the safety center pilot

The Lake Street Safety Center is part of the City’s vision for a new community safety ecosystem. The center allows space for service providers to meet and work together.

Its location is where the community has expressed a strong need for services and support. You will be able to walk in and connect with City and community partners.

Property found and community outreach started

Lake Street Safety Center is open

  • The Lake Street Safety Center opened on Nov. 4, 2024.
  • The center is located at 2228 East Lake Street.
May 2025

Launching safety programs

  • Visitors can file non-emergency police reports at the Lake Street Safety Center. 
  • Safety Ambassador program launch.
June 2025

Open house

  • On June 10, we held our first open house event. 
August 2025

Changing facility hours

  • Changed the hours of operation to Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.  
September 2025

Open house

  • On Sept. 24, we hosted an open house.
November 2025

Enhancing the safety programs

  • The Community Safety Surveillance Dispatcher starts training on Nov. 3, 2025.
