We pick up garbage, recycling, organics and more from residential properties in the City. We also offer community cleanup programs and run a drop-off site.

What we do

Collection service providers

  • City staff pick up from half of residential customers.
  • The City contracts with Minneapolis Refuse Inc. (MRI) to pick up from the other half.

Vouchers

Customers get vouchers to bring waste to our South Transfer Station

  • Garbage
  • Large items (appliances, electronics, mattresses, metal items)
  • Building materials
  • Tires

Material management

Recyclable materials processing

  • Recycling is sorted into 12-15 categories.
  • Organics and yard waste are brought to a transfer station within city limits. Semi-trucks are filled with yard waste and organics. The semi-trucks drive to a commercial composting facility.
  • Large metal items and appliances are disassembled by City staff. The metal is sold to scrap metal vendors for recycling.
  • Mattresses are collected and disassembled for recycling
  • Electronics are transferred via semi-truck for recycling.
  • Tires can only be dropped-off at the South Transfer Station. They are recycled.

Material disposal for residential garbage

Residential garbage is brought to the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC).

HERC is a a waste-to-energy facility owned by Hennepin County in downtown Minneapolis.

 

Material disposal for building materials

Building materials are brought by customers to the South Transfer Station.

Some are recycled and some are landfilled.  Non-recyclable building materials go to a construction and demolition landfill.

We do not pickup building materials

  • You cannot put building materials out for pickup at your home. We will not pick them up.
  • You must bring them to the South Transfer Station with a voucher or a private landfill.

In 2024, Solid Waste & Recycling collected a total of 132,350 tons of material.

This is a 1.5% increase from 2023.
