MFD hosts first-time 'Firefighter for a Day' experience for individuals with disabilities

October 8, 2025

The Minneapolis Fire Department recently partnered with The Arc Minnesota to give community members with disabilities the chance to experience what it’s like to be a firefighter for a day.

At the City’s Emergency Operations Training Facility, several community members, including two adults with disabilities, suited up in firefighting gear, learned about fire safety, used rescue tools, and even helped put out a live fire. The experience gave participants a hands-on look at the teamwork and dedication behind the department’s work.

The opportunity was made possible by Joel Peters-Fransen, who purchased the “Firefighter for a Day” experience at The Arc Minnesota’s fundraising auction. Peters-Fransen, who attended with his son James and colleagues from Winthrop & Weinstine, wanted to include the people who benefit directly from The Arc’s programs. He invited the organization, which selected Elizabeth Neuville, Jason Boggess, to take part.

“Our Minneapolis-based law firm is proud to support the incredible work of The Arc,” said Peters-Fransen. “We deeply value the unique experience created by the Minneapolis Fire Department and remain committed to supporting downtown Minneapolis.”

For the firefighters, the day was just as meaningful. “It’s important for us to show what we do and to make it meaningful for everyone,” said Fire Training Chief Colm Black, who helped lead the event along with Deputy Chief of Minneapolis EMS Amber Lage.

This first-time collaboration showcased the power of building community connections and creating inclusive opportunities. By opening their doors and sharing their work, the Minneapolis Fire Department is committed to strengthening relationships, promoting understanding, and creating opportunities to provide accessible opportunities. The event reflected the department’s continued dedication to community engagement, education, and inclusion—especially during Fire Prevention Month.
