Goals of sign code change

Recent plans say signs could help make downtown more lively. They also suggest ways to improve the main entertainment areas.

Staff looked at the current rules for signs to see where we could make changes to:

  • Increase vibrancy
  • Improve sense of safety
  • Support public access to arts and culture
  • Increase visibility for downtown businesses

The sign code amendment changed the zoning rules for things like:

  • Types of signs, size, and locations allowed
  • Permitting requirements for signs
  • Ban on new billboards and changing existing billboards from static to digital
The city has paused new billboard approvals. You can’t switch old billboards from static to digital right now. This pause is temporary while the city updates its rules. In some cases, you may still be allowed to upgrade an old sign to digital.
