Electric vehicle charging amendment

Minneapolis adopted an outdoor food lockers amendment in October 2022.

Background

On October 6, 2022, the City Council updated the zoning rules to encourage new buildings to add:

  • Electric vehicle (EV) chargers
  • Related infrastructure

The new regulations also require that new and expanded parking lots to make the additions.

Zoning regulation

  • The the ordinance incentives use our existing zoning code points systems. New developments must provide EV chargers and related infrastructure when pursuing:
    • PUD points
    • Height premium points
    • FAR premium points for underground/enclosed parking.
  • There is a new standard that incentivizes EV charging for 1 - 3-unit developments.
  • There is now a requirement to supply EV charging stations in:
    • New surface parking lots of 20 spaces or more
    • Existing parking lots that are expanded by 20 spaces or more
