Why you need a permit

The City helps locate and mark where underground utilities are.

This helps to prevent accidents, such as:

  • Power outages
  • Water outages

It also helps prevent dangerous situations like:

  • Gas leaks
  • Electric shocks

This process can often start with permits.

Each type of line can have a different color.

Understand the underground utility lines

Imagine the different underground utility lines that connect to a house and the main lines under the street.

Picture that there is a section of the ground cut away. It would reveal these underground lines, and you would see them leading from the street to a house.

This can help you recognize the complexity of utility connections. It can also help you recognize the need for safety and awareness when working near these lines.
