Races permit

The City requires a permit for races when any portion is on a city street.

Definition

Races are:

  • Organized competitions of human speed or endurance that include a procession of people.
  • Held along one or more contiguous (connected) blocks of a street(s). These streets are closed to traffic during the event.
  • Events that the public can watch.

When you need a permit

A race permit is required when any part of the event occurs on a city street. Race event examples include:

  • Bicycle races
  • Foot races
  • Race walking
  • Wheelchair racing
  • Rollerblading
  • Marathons
  • Jogging events

Learn what to know to host a race in Minneapolis.

Hours and dates

Races downtown

Races in the downtown area may not take place between:

  • 7:00 a.m.- 9:00 a.m.
  • 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.

Exceptions are on Saturdays, Sundays or a legal holiday.

Races in all other locations

Races shall only take place between 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

They can only take place on:

  • Saturdays
  • Sundays
  • Legal holidays

 

Insurance

You must have a commercial general insurance policy for the race with coverage of at least:

  • One million dollars ($1,000,000) total, and
  • One million dollars ($1,000,000) per occurrence

Security plan

You must provide and pay for security staff under an approved security plan.

Street closures, signs and barriers

You must provide and pay for barricades and traffic control under an approved traffic control plan.

The City may install and remove:

  • Barricades
  • Signs*
  • Other equipment

*There may be extra costs if we must post temporary "No Parking" signs along the route.

Barricades and other equipment can also be rented from several local private firms.

Cleanup plan

You must have an approved disposal plan.

During the event, remove all garbage and recyclables according to the plan.

Security deposit for large races

For large races, you must pay a security deposit. This is to ensure garbage and recyclables are properly removed after the event.

Fees

You must pay the race permit fee to obtain the permit.

Race type Cost
Large races (10km or longer) $600
All other races $300

Security deposit fee (large races only): $800

Other fees

You may also need to pay:

  • Traffic management fees
  • Signage fees
  • Waste and recycling costs
  • A security deposit fee (for large races)

Ways to pay

You can pay your fees:

  • In cash. You can drop off cash payment in person at our office.
  • By check. You can pay by check either by:
    • Mail
    • Drop off in person at our office
