You need a permit to install, change or extend fire safety systems:

  • Fire sprinklers
  • Standpipe
  • Fire pumps
  • Private hydrant systems
  • Fire detection and alarm systems
  • Smoke control systems control panels

Permit process

Step 1

Make sure you have the right license

Type of work Required license
Fire alarm and communications systems Electrician or low voltage contractor through the State of Minnesota
Systems designers for fire alarm and communications systems NICET Level 3 Certified, or factory trained and certified in fire alarm system designs
Fire suppression system/sprinkler systems Fire protection contractor through the State of Minnesota
Work on smoke control systems that involves sheet metal, refrigeration and heating Licensed contractor through the City of Minneapolis
Step 2

Complete the application and related forms

We use one application form for all types of projects.

You may need to submit an information form specific to the type of project.

Step 3

Submit the forms via email

Email us your application and information form

Hold off on submitting your project plans. If needed, we'll ask you to submit them later through ProjectDox.

Step 4

Pay the fee

Pay the fee when you submit your application. The fee is based on:

  • The contract cost, which equals the total price the property owner paid
  • The plan review fee
  • State surcharge

Step 5

Upload your plans to ProjectDox if needed

We'll ask you to submit more information if you're:

  • Doing a new installation
  • Adding, moving, or changing the size of piping or other parts and devices

Plan requirements

Your project may have specific requirements. Regardless of the type of project, all designs must follow:

  • State Fire Code
  • NFPA standards
  • Minneapolis Fire Inspections requirements
