Commercial building registration

You must register your commercial building for fire safety.

Definition

Minneapolis City ordinance defines commercial buildings as:

  • Any building that the state building and fire code apply to, and
  • Is not used for living.

The registration is often called "FCOM," which is short for "fire commercial."

What to know

Why register commercial buildings

Every commercial building in Minneapolis must be registered with the City. It helps us:

  • Carry out building and fire code inspections
  • Notify people during an emergency
  • Respond quicker to 311 requests
  • Update City property records

When to update your registration

  • Annually
  • Any time the owner changes

Registration requirements

  • Minneapolis uses one registration form for all types of commercial buildings.
  • In multi-use buildings, you only need to register the area(s) that are not used for living.
