St. Anthony West's percentage of people living below the poverty level was at its lowest in 1990 while Minneapolis reported its highest percentage that year. The neighborhood percentage increased to a high of 20 percent by 2000, exceeding the city's. The percentage of people 65 and over living below the poverty level in St. Anthony West steadily declined between 1980 and 2000 but remained higher than the percentage in Minneapolis.
In 1980 and 1990, a lower percentage of families lived under the poverty level in St. Anthony West than in Minneapolis. Then in 2000, the neighborhood percentage doubled to a proportion almost twice as high as Minneapolis'. In 1980, St. Anthony West and Minneapolis each reported that 16 percent of their families with children lived below the poverty level. The neighborhood figure increased to 30 percent in 2000 while the city's ended up at 19 percent.
