In Near North, the percentage of people 16 and older with a job or looking for work gradually increased to 57 percent in 2000. This population has historically been lower in Near North than in Minneapolis as a whole.
Unemployment levels are significantly higher in Near North than they are in the City of Minneapolis. Joblessness spiked in 1990 with 21.7 percent of the labor force looking for work. The rate dropped in 2000 but still remained comparatively high at 16.6 percent.
