A substantially lower percentage of people live in poverty in Kenwood than in Minneapolis, but percentages for both the neighborhood and the city increased from 1979 to 1999. Kenwood's percentage was only 3 percent in 1999, compared to 17 percent citywide.

A higher percentage of people aged 65 and over lived in poverty in Kenwood in 1999 than in 1979, although the figure had declined somewhat after 1989. In comparison, the percentage of people aged 65 and over living in poverty in the city decreased from 1979 to 1989 and then leveled off by 1999.

In 1979 and 1989, Kenwood had no families living below the poverty level. In 1999 though, 1 percent of the families in the neighborhood were living in poverty. These are significantly lower than citywide figures for the same years.
