Poverty

The poverty level in Keewaydin is very low compared to Minneapolis. The proportion of people below the poverty level was the same in 1979 and 1999, with a small rise in 1989. In 1999, 3 percent of Keewaydin residents lived in poverty, compared to 17 percent citywide.

The percentage of the senior population living in poverty was higher than the general population living in poverty, and it increased from 1979 to 1999. In 1999 it was 8 percent, just below the citywide rate of 11 percent. In 1979 the gap between neighborhood and city had been much larger.

In general, the percentage of families living in poverty is quite low in the neighborhood. Only 1 percent of all families were below the poverty level in 1999, compared to 12 percent citywide. A higher percentage of families with children lived in poverty – 2 percent in 1999 – but that was still very low compared to the citywide rate of 19 percent.
