Downtown West's average household size was consistently below Minneapolis' between 1980 and 2000.

Most household types in Downtown West were those with people living alone, whether under or over the age of 65. People living alone in these two age groups combined were more than 70 percent of all households in 2000. The number of family households, which accounted for 11 percent of the neighborhood's households in 1980, grew by 57 percent to bring its share of the neighborhood population to 18 percent.

Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of householders living alone was much higher in Downtown West than in Minneapolis. Downtown West's percentage dropped between 1980 and 2000 but increased between 1990 and 2000.

Downtown West's percentage of seniors living alone was well above the Minneapolis level between 1980 and 2000. However, the neighborhood's percentage consistently dropped during these years.

The percentage of families with children under 18 was considerably lower in Downtown West than in Minneapolis. However, the neighborhood's percentage more than doubled between 1980 and 2000.
