Downtown East's median household income rose from 1979 to 1999. Minneapolis' income also climbed, but the city's $5,000 increase was less than a third of the neighborhood's $18,000 rise during this time. A big leap in neighborhood income took place between 1979 and 1989, when it jumped from almost $27,000 to more than $44,000.
