A higher percentage of people live in poverty in Beltrami than in Minneapolis, and the percentage increased steadily in the neighborhood. In 1999, 24 percent of Beltrami residents lived below the poverty level, compared to 17 percent of Minneapolis residents. Nobody 65 years and over lived below the poverty level in Beltrami in 1979 or 1999, but 9 percent did in 1989. In Minneapolis the percentage of the same age group living in poverty decreased from 13 percent in 1979 to 11 percent in 1999.
Beltrami tends to have a higher proportion than Minneapolis of families and families with children below the poverty level. Between 1979 and 1999, Minneapolis' percentage of families below the poverty level increased from 9 percent to 12 percent and the percentage of families with children in poverty increased from 16 percent to 19 percent. At the same time, Beltrami's percentage of families living in poverty increased from 18 percent to 25 percent and the percentage of families with children living in poverty decreased slightly from 37 percent to 36 percent, even though it dropped substantially in 1989.
