The average household size in Armatage declined in both 1990 and 2000. Between 1980 and 2000, the overall household size decreased by four percentage points, from 2.5 in 1980 to 2.1 in 2000. This contrasts with Minneapolis figures that remained at 2.2 people per household between 1980 and 1990 and then increased to 2.3 in 2000.

Armatage household composition changed significantly between 1980 and 2000. Family households made up 76 percent of the total households in 1980, but in 2000 this percentage declined to 55 percent. All other types of households increased during this time. Households of people who live alone and are under age 65 increased the most with a 147-percent rise between 1980 and 2000.

The percentage of householders living alone in Armatage was less than half the city average in 1980. That difference has narrowed over time, but the percent of lone-occupants in Armatage is still 21 points below the citywide average.

Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of seniors living alone was lower in Armatage than the percentage throughout Minneapolis. The difference, however, decreased during this time period from 15 percent less than the citywide figure to only 4 percent less.

Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of families with children under 18 was lower in Armatage than it was citywide. 1990 had the neighborhood's lowest percentage at 34 percent; it increased to 38 percent in 2000.
