Youth Violence Prevention in Minneapolis

About

Minneapolis addresses youth violence using a public health approach. Public health issues are preventable and affect the entire community. A public health approach to violence has three main focuses:

  1. Primary Prevention: helping communities stay safe and violence-free.
  2. Secondary Prevention: redirecting at-risk individuals and groups to safer behaviors and environments.
  3. Tertiary Prevention: rehabilitating those engaged in violence and fostering safe re-entry into the community.

On all three levels of prevention, the Minneapolis Health Department (MHD) works with its partners—police, schools, parks, county services, community organizations, youth, and more—toward a common goal of reducing violence among young people in Minneapolis.

New initiatives include: replicating the evidence-based Group Violence Intervention strategy; Next Step, a hospital-based youth violence intervention program; and a CDC-funded project addressing shared risk and protective factors between teen dating violence and youth-violence. Policy work, including supporting sensible gun laws, is also an important component of MHD’s efforts.
