Environments Play an Important Role in our Health
The Minneapolis Health Department is partnering with institutions and communities to create more opportunities for everyone to eat healthy, be active, and live tobacco-free as part of their daily life. Healthy behaviors start at home but are heavily influenced by the opportunities available in the places we live, learn, work, and play. Places like schools, childcare and worksites play an important role in shaping the health of those they employ and serve.
Our neighborhoods and communities also play an important role in creating access to healthy eating, physical activity and tobacco free living opportunities for residents. However, some neighborhood and communities face barriers to healthy living opportunities. Engaging and partnering with residents, including youth, is a key strategy to address barriers to healthy living in a way that fits the community’s needs.
Tips and resources for creating healthy places in your school, worksite, or community
- Get involved in your community. Find out if there is a wellness committee (or interest in starting one) at your worksite, child’s school, or neighborhood association.
- Use this tip sheet to think about how to improve healthy eating, physical activity opportunities in schools, worksites and neighborhoods.
