Trees help provide shade, lower energy bills and increase property values.

Tree Preservation Ordinance

The City of Minneapolis is creating a new rule to protect trees during construction, called a Tree Preservation Ordinance (TPO). Its main goals are to:

  • Stop trees from being removed during construction when possible
  • Replace trees that are lost
  • Keep trees healthy after construction

We want to hear from you. Tell us what matters most about trees in Minneapolis. Your ideas will help us make clear, fair rules that work for everyone.

Overview

A TPO is a local rule that helps protect trees during construction. It explains:

  • How to keep trees safe
  • When and how to replace trees
  • What happens if the rules are not followed

Goal of a Tree Preservation Ordinance

Minneapolis has many big, beautiful trees. But trees are lost due to:

  • Pests
  • Disease
  • Construction

This ordinance will help the city grow in a way that protects trees whenever possible.

Public Engagement and Participation

Trees give us shade in summer, help prevent flooding, and make neighborhoods better. We want your input, and no special knowledge is needed. Just share your experience and ideas. Your feedback will help us set priorities for the TPO.

Tree benefits

Adding trees to your property benefits you and the whole community. You can:

  • Shade and cool your house or apartment
  • Lower utility bills
  • Increase property value
  • Clean the air
  • Collect stormwater
  • Provide a habitat for wildlife
  • Improve your health and well-being

We've planted thousands of trees throughout the city since launching this program in 2006.

Tree survey

We are taking inventory of all trees from past tree sales to see whether they have survived. Please let us know how your tree is doing if you have a tree from the City Trees program.
