TO PROTECT WITH COURAGE

TO SERVE WITH COMPASSION

Officer Vicki Karnik

I will be starting my 20th year with the Minneapolis Police Department. I work as a patrol officer in the 3rd Precinct answering 911 calls. Besides my patrol functions, I work part-time with some other units.

For 14 years I have been a hostage negotiator with our SWAT Team. I have been on numerous call outs called "Operation 100’s" over the years. I receive monthly training to keep my skills up. What I have learned as a negotiator has helped me with my handling of police calls and also dealing with people in my personal life.

For over 7 years, I have been a part of our Mounted Patrol Unit. I love horses and I get paid to ride. We work downtown primarily for bar closing. If a precinct needs our assistance for a high crime area or a protest, we will respond.

The last 6 years, I have been part of our Honor Guard Unit. I believe in giving respect to the officer who has worn our uniform and served this city. In 2004, I had the privilege of representing our city. I traveled to Washington D.C. for the police memorial during police week. Every officer in their career should visit there. It puts life in perspective.

Our department is large enough to move around in as an officer or a supervisor. This job and this department is all what you make of it. I have a great career.
