Sgt. Aimee Hawes
I have worked for the Minneapolis Police Department since September 1997. After the Academy I was assigned to 3 rd Precinct where I worked the middle shift and dogwatch as a 911 responder. While assigned to 3 rd Precinct I was able to become a member of our Crisis Intervention Team and also a member of our SWAT Negotiator team. I remained in 3 rd Precinct until 2007 when I was fortunate to be able to take a full-time position on our Mounted Patrol Unit.
In 2008 I was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to 2 nd Precinct where I have been for the last 2 1/2 working as a street supervisor and Codefor coordinator.
I received my Bachelors degree from Gustavus Adolphus College and my Masters degree from Metro State University. I am a member of the Community Faculty at Metro State and currently teach Juvenile Justice. I feel my experiences while working with Minneapolis PD has helped me be a better teacher and also given me experiences to relate "text book teachings" to my students.
The Police Department has enabled me to receive training that I do not think you could get from another department. I have been to a bomb-proofing school in Mobile, AL with our Mounted Patrol where we were deputized and actually worked Mardi Gras. I have also had some of the best training in Negotiations and Advanced Negotiations where we worked with actors who specialize in portraying people in crisis. MPD enables officers to find their strengths throughout their careers and then put those strengths to use. I am very proud to be part of this department.
