K-9 Haus began his MPD career in 2004. He is a dual purpose K-9, trained in patrol work and narcotics detection. His handler is Officer Brian Thureson. This team is currently assigned to the night shift.
K-9 Maui is a 2 year old German Shepherd and has been with the Canine Unit since 2006. K-9 Maui is currently assigned to Officer Bonnie Edwards and is trained in criminal apprehension, building searches, tracking and articles searches. K-9 Maui will be trained to locate narcotics in 2007.
K-9 Midnite and his handler, Sergeant Chuck McCree, began their K-9 careers together in the spring of 2006. K-9 Midnite is a two year old male, solid black German Shepherd. He was imported from Eastern Europe and trained by the MPD. K-9 Midnite specializes in searching for criminals, evidence and narcotics – inside buildings, in outdoor areas and in vehicles. This awesome twosome completed their USPCA patrol dog certification two months after training and they are looking forward to participating in the 2006 USPCA National Field Trial. They are currently assigned to the night shift.
K-9 Rocky began his police career in the spring of 2006. He is a male German Shepherd and weighs about 65 pounds. K-9 Rocky was imported from Eastern Europe. He is specially trained to search for dangerous criminals in buildings and outside areas. K-9 Rocky’s handler, Officer Matt Blade, joined the MPD in 1995 and became a canine officer in 2006. This hardworking team is currently assigned to the night shift.
K-9 Shadow and his handler, Officer Joe Fuller, began their K-9 careers together in the spring of 2006. K-9 Shadow is a male German Shepherd, imported from Eastern Europe and trained by the MPD. K-9 Shadow and Officer Fuller are currently assigned to the night shift.
K-9 Cain is a male German Shepherd who was imported from Germany and began his training with the K-9 unit in the fall of 2006. He has been trained as a patrol dog and is used for apprehending criminals through tracking and biting. K-9 Cain’s handler, Officer Bittell, has been with the department since 1998 and came to the Canine unit with Cain. They are assigned to the night watch.
K-9 Tadhg was imported from Slovakia in January, 2008 and joined the MPD Canine Unit in March, 2008 - his handler is Officer Becky Hodgin. After completing 12 weeks of Patrol Dog Training, K-9 Tadhg began his official duties in June, 2008. In 2009, he will receive additional training in narcotics detection. K-9 Tadhg and Officer Hodgin work together on the day shift. Officer Hodgin has been a member of the Canine Unit since 1994 and is one of two certified trainers in the program.
K-9 Hero came to the Minneapolis Police Department in March of 2008. He went through a 12 week training course teaching him how to catch bad guys. He then started working the street. He will be trained to sniff out hidden drugs. He loves to go to work and catch bad guys and do police work. K-9 Hero and his handler, Officer Dan Ungurian, work the day shift. When K-9 Hero is at home, he loves to play with kids and other dogs.
K-9 Maverick arrived in March of 2008 to the Minneapolis Police Department. He is a full blooded German Shepherd. His training consisted of a 12-week period of obedience and apprehending criminals. He then graduated and went on to become a patrol dog. His passion is working with his handler and pursuing bad guys. K-9 Maverick and his handler, Officer Mark Madich, work the night shift. WhenK-9 Maverickis at home, he enjoys playing withother dogs and kids.
K-9 Torin was imported from Eastern Europe in 2008 and joined the Minneapolis Canine Unit in March of 2009. K-9 Torin Has completed a 12 week course and has been trained in criminal apprehension, building searches, tracking and article searches. K-9 Torin is assigned to Officer Fahey and together they serve the fine citizens of Minneapolis on the night shift.
K9 Han and his handler Officer Lindquist, began their K-9 career in the spring of 2009. K-9 Han is a German Shepherd imported from Germany and weighs in at 80lbs. K-9 Han is trained for searching, tracking and apprehending bad guys, evidence searching, and narcotics detection. Han and Lindquist are currently assigned the night shift.
Bullet is a 3 year old male German Shepherd/Malinois mixed breed who loves to play. When not working in the city of Minneapolis, Bullet loves to run around in the backyard with his retired police K9 buddy Godiva. Bullet loves kids and enjoys fetching anything that is thrown.
Bullet says, “Put down the video games and stop texting! Read a book!”
In September 2010, K9 Nash (a Belgian Malinois) left his home in Winnipeg, Canada and became partners with Sgt. Andy Stender. Sgt. Stender trained K9 Nash in obedience; searching; tracking and apprehension. In addition to the regular duties performed by K9 Nash, he is also a member of the Minneapolis SWAT Team and an Explosive Detector K9.
