Pedestrian Advisory Committee Resolution

To:        Minneapolis City Council, Minneapolis Public Works

From: Minneapolis Pedestrian Advisory Committee

Date: June 5, 2019

Subject: Broadway Bridge Reconstruction

Broadway Bridge Reconstruction

The Pedestrian Advisory Committee feels the current direction of the Broadway Bridge Reconstruction is incompatible with the City's commitments to Vision Zero, complete streets, and addressing climate change by aggressively reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by vehicles.

Although the PAC appreciates the attention given to improving geometry for pedestrians underneath the bridges, we feel strongly that the centerpiece of the project perpetuates hostility to pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users.

Building new high-speed automobile infrastructure to move four lanes of cars and trucks at 40 miles per hour through the city, especially in a part of the city with a long history of inequity, perpetuates violence against the city.

We request in the strongest possible terms that this project be reconceptualized to reduce the number and speed of vehicles entering the city.
